Certo Shop

Certo Shop

Why We Love It | From Cangas do Morrazo, Jose and Rubén opened a small but beautiful space, Certo Shop, in which vintage and current design pieces, carefully selected by them, coexist.

They love to travel and discover through Europe the pieces that they later restore and offer in the store.

A real luxury ready to enjoy in their beautiful space.

How was Certo Shop born?

We start thinking about our project when we visited antique fairs and shops or simply spaces that caught our attention for their concept or shopping experience.

At first it was more of a dream that we discussed as a couple as something that motivated us to continue with our jobs to be able to do it later, but in 2017 we were both unemployed and we decided to make it a reality.

In the summer of that same year, we decided to rent a van and travel to the fairs in the south of France without really knowing what we were going to find.

We both agree that it was the best trip of our lives so far, but what we were doing at the time was still a long way from what we are now.

We began to restore the pieces that we got on that trip without much knowledge but with a lot of dedication and desire to do it well, we set up our online store and gradually learned how to continue shaping it.

Until a little over a year ago we had to combine it with other jobs to be able to support ourselves and it was precisely in the year 2020, shortly before the declaration of the State of Alarm, when we began to think about opening a physical store.

In the new space we wanted to have pieces of crafts, illustrators and brands that would inspire us in general.

With a good number of suppliers already contacted and about to start placing orders, they tell us that we have to stay home indefinitely.

At first, as for everyone, it was a jug of cold water, but we psyched ourselves up, continued working through the online store and took advantage of the time to perfect the project with our sights set on 2021.

We finally managed to open the physical store on May 29 and the truth is that we are sure that without that parenthesis that the pandemic gave us, Certo would not be what it is right now.

Who are you?

Behind Certo we are Jose and Rubén.

Jose studied photography and Rubén textile design.

In any case both of us have had many and very varied jobs since we were very young and we suppose that all of them contribute in some way to what we are doing now.

At Certo we have learned to do everything.

We only have contracted a consultancy that handles tax matters for us and everything else is on our own, using a little of the knowledge and experience that we already had and, above all, of what we have been learning since we started the project.

We select the pieces, restore, upholster, photograph, design and manage the online store, we carry the RRSS and now we also run the physical store.

There has been a lot of trial and error in these five years in which the project itself has become a constant training in everything that we need to move forward.

Now, for a year now, we have also had the collaboration of Miguel and Raquel, a Spanish couple who live in a small town four hours north of London and who are in charge of buying much of the English and Danish furniture for half of 20th century that we have in our catalogue.

Traveling is our inspiration and also meeting other shops and professionals that we admire

JOSE & RUBÉN

What makes you unique?

Certo is a very personal project because we love everything we offer.

There are many things that freak us out and they are not for pricing policy issues or because it is logistically complicated, but what is there is because we like it and deeply respect the work behind it.

We don’t believe either the “height of originality” because what we sell is available to “everyone”, but we do believe that the selection is unique.

And it is because the different pieces of vintage furniture and decoration that we personally select and restore and those of our craft brands or supplier illustrators build that, a very unique and appetizing combination.

There are many stores with concepts similar to ours, we have not invented anything, but the cool thing about this type of store is that we believe that it is impossible for there to be one the same as the other.

People are also often quite surprised that we have opened in a small town like Cangas, perhaps that also gives it a different point from other stores of this type that are in larger cities.

How do you define Certo Shop in a few words?

Certo is a space where vintage and current design pieces coexist that inspire us and that we enjoy selecting and showing to our clients.

How is the Atlantic culture reflected in your work?

We are from Compostela and Cangas.

We were clear from the beginning that the store had to be in Cangas.

The Atlantic culture is part of who we are and from the door of our store we see the Ría every day.

On Tuesday and Friday mornings we listen to the hustle and bustle of the market and on weekends when we close at lunchtime, it is rare that we do not drop by to have a Lodeiros vermouth and a few rations in the places that surround us.

The truth is that today we only understand Certo in this environment.

Mareas

Mareas

Why We Love It | From Getxo, Asis and Nerea make beautiful designs inspired by the Atlantic Ocean.

A simple table of the tides have turned it into a beautiful and functional design object

They love to take care of every detail in their designs and they handcraft each one with an authentic Atlantic Style.

Genuine designs that emanate nature, sustainability, sea and beauty.

Where to find | https://mareas.co/

All pictures are from mareas

How was mareas born?

We have always liked to do work with our hands, from some of the furniture for the house, to surfboards.

With this premise, a few years ago we made a tide calendar (to decorate our house), which included the days of the month and the week and the different tides of the day.

After a while we thought: “that design and finish could have a place in the homes of sea lovers”.

We got to work and in a short time, we made an Excel system to dump the data and transform it into our design.

From then, we have been thinking about products with careful design and with the common denominator of life around the sea.

And little by little we create a brand concept.

Who are you?

We are a couple from Getxo, an engineer and a graphic designer.

Between the two of us we do everything you can find in mareas.

From the design and creation of the products, to the development and management of the web, the networks and all the content that appears on them.

So there is no doubt that we put a lot of ourselves into the brand.

this design and finish could have a place in the homes of sea lovers

ASIS & NEREA

What makes you unique?

These are handmade pieces with love.

They are perfectly imperfect, an undeniable trait that makes each piece beautiful and unique.

As we like to put when defining our brand.

How do you define mareas in a few words?

Mareas is much more than handcrafted objects for all those who love the sea. Inspired by coastal life, nature and friendship

How is the Atlantic culture reflected in your work?

They are objects whose nature is linked to that of the Atlantic Ocean, since this is an important part of our inspiration.

Why We Love It | Rosalía lives in Lugo (inland Galicia) in her studio that she shares with her inseparable dog companion Max.

Her interest in investigating fabric has led her to experiment with different natural materials, creating unique pieces and objects where creativity and tradition merge naturally.

Each piece is unique and made with great passion and care.

Behind each work there are many hours of experimentation and also thousands of stories that the material itself brings with it.

Her connection with Atlantic Culture and nature is tangible.

They are Pieces with authentic Atlantic Néboa Style, whose materials lasted and Rosalía has managed to give them a new, even more lasting life.

What is the history behind Valaveta?

Valaveta was created in 2020, it is a studio of textile design, experimentation and unique objects in which creativity is merged with tradition.

It was born naturally and you could say spontaneously, I have no studies related to textile design or interior design, all the knowledge I acquired was self-taught and related to courses taught by other artists, designers and artisans.

The base of the fabric is quite common regardless of its tools, I just gave it the shape and purpose I wanted.

I must highlight that a great trigger for Valaveta was knowing that my great-grandmother and my grandmother wove in the family home, with their own loom, and that now I keep pieces and material that belonged to them.

Since its birth I have sought to break deeply rooted schemes in Galicia regarding traditional weaving, exploring new horizons in textile design, giving prominence at the same time to the richness of our materials and their impact on culture.

Why discover new materials?

From the beggining, I have sought to break deeply rooted schemes in Galicia in terms of traditional weaving, exploring new horizons in textile design, giving prominence at the same time to the richness of our materials and their impact on culture.

I believe that each design is a visual narrative with great artistic sensibility.

What values are important to you?

The studio is built on solid values: the use of noble materials such as linen or cotton, which contain a history and come from sustainable sources, to create personal growth in a contemporary vision of each design without tearing and maintaining an ancestral, raw aesthetic and primary.

What’s your inspiration?

The inspiration comes from multiple sources, I think that everything we perceive can be an influence, but I would highlight Galician folklore itself; the design in multiple locations (Galician, Central European…) and aspects; the natural environment with its stunning stone formations; architecture, especially the brutalist movement and the Bauhaus.

In my area specifically, I admire figures like Anni Albers, Magdalena Abakanowicz or Teresa Lanceta and a lot of inspiration from the pure and simple beauty of Japanese fabrics.

.

And the future?

Currently there are very interesting projects with a very clear vision in this field, so I believe in a promising and bright future in contemporary textile craftsmanship.

How does the Atlantic Culture influence you?

I am very influenced by Atlantic culture beyond the borders of our land, I feel a common identity with the landscape, culture, customs or values, which are clearly reflected in the way each piece is constructed in the studio.

The pieces created in Valaveta are singular and unique, because of how the idea is shaped on the loom in a very fluid but improvised way, or because of how that already woven piece culminates an object in a very natural way.

I feel very safe and connected with the new series of pieces that I am currently creating in the studio, based on the concept of the “Third Landscape”. A variety of lithic pieces, dressed in a custom-made fabric for each one.

Atlantic Port Photography by Néboa concept & Puri Díaz

atlantic port

Néboa concept & Puri Díaz

The story begins and ends in a port.

A fishing port where the boats are the protagonists.

Sometimes the sea has calm days but other days there are great storms that leave their mark.

And it’s about that mark that remains on the skin of the boats that I am going to talk to you about today.

It’s the first series of photographs made exclusively for Néboa concept by the artist Puri Díaz and that you can buy directly from the Néboa website.

It is the first Atlantic Style Collection by Néboa concept that you can show off in your home and I hope it is the first of many more.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Puri Díaz was born&raised in Vigo (Galicia), an Atlantic city with an industrial character but surrounded by spectacular white sand beaches and lush forests.

Puri always wanted to have a creative profession since she was a child and studied Fine Arts in Barcelona, where life took her before returning to Vigo.

She grew up surrounded by photos, paintings, drawings and boats made by her great-grandfather in a small workshop.

She loves the smell of the sea and coffee.

And it is right next to the sea where she lives and where she was inspired for this series of photographs.

It is the Bouzas neighborhood in Vigo, next to the port, where Puri walked and photographed the skins of the big ships as they rested after their voyages.

As she says:

“I enjoy walking and observing the “scars on their skins.” What the sea does to them and how it transforms them.”

And precisely those steel skins with their scars after months at sea are the result of this wonderful collection with the taste of salt and the smell of the sea.

About Atlantic Port Colecction

I was pretty sure that Néboa concept would have a important space for art. And I was also clear that it would be Art aligned with Atlantic Culture.

At the beginning of Néboa concept, in 2016, the inspiration and connection with the Atlantic port of Vigo was the key to create Lar Atlántica, so in this first series of exclusive Photography for Néboa concept, it could not be other than to bring such an important detail in the Atlantic landscape as the large ships that rest in our ports.

And another challenge I had was that all those people who want to give a touch of Atlantic Style to their home could do so through the selection of Atlantic art from Néboa concept.

Each image is a close look at the steel skin that covers each ship, its markings and its colors.

We are used to seeing them from a distance, we do not usually have them so close.

By doing so we can discover those small imperfections made by the sea that lead us to imagine storms on the high seas, the friction of daily work and those long months seeing only sea and stars.

It is a work by a local artist and printed by another local company.

You will be helping small businesses continue to grow and to make local artists visible.

So for today, all I have to say is that you come into the store, enjoy the pictures, imagine them in some corner of your home and choose the one you like best.

If you are here, I know that you are going to buy responsibly and you are going to take into account everything I have told you and you also have a 100% Atlantic spirit.

What is the history about your project?

Bela Furtiva was born in 2020, in the middle of COVID confinement, from an idea that had been spinning around in my head for many years and that was able to materialize at that moment thanks to the time that I suddenly had.

Since 2008 I have run my own interior design studio Nanube and I always wanted to complete this activity with an offer of furniture from my own design catalog thanks to the experience we acquired in designing personalized furniture for each type of space.

It also coincided in 2020 that I found myself at a turning point in my life, associated with a personal crisis, and the internal processes in which I found myself made me reconnect with the figure of my deceased paternal grandmother, trying to understand her.

So naturally I came up with the idea of communicating with her through what I know how to do, her design, proposing to approach a collection of furniture like the ones I thought she would like if she were alive today. This is how our first collection was born: Fenta.

Since my grandmother was born in Carballo, I was inspired there: by her own house, by the rationalist architecture, and also very intensely by her wild landscapes, such as Razo, an Atlantic enclave of immense beauty.

And all of this would be imbued in the DNA of Bela Furtiva, which aims, in general terms, to pay tribute to all those women who dare to live by their own rules, breaking with stereotypes and social conventions that relegate them to the background.

What’s your Background? What are your most important values?

I am an engineer, with a degree in design from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, becoming interested in design from a very young age and creating my own career in this field from a time when the discipline was little known in Galicia and there was practically no training.

About my values, I would cite three more importants for me that deeply move me:

Galician culture, to understand it, give it shape and project a new perspective.

Diversity in all its breadth, starting with the cause of women and encompassing, among other concerns, the overcoming of gender roles, sexual freedom and the integration of people with disabilities,

Sustainability, as a way of being, thinking and acting that connects us with the nature that we are.

Why is the the artisanal process important for Bela Furtiva?

The artisanal process is the key for Bela Furtiva, because it allows us to put people at the center of everything we do.

It is necessary to give full importance to the fact that products conceived through artisanal processes involve the soul of those who execute them and also touch the souls of the people who acquire them or interact with them.

Craftsmanship allows, on the other hand, to integrate innovation and creativity with human relationships and more sustainable work rhythms, even with the complexity involved in achieving this in a society like ours.

Aymat Colection

What is Design for you?

For me, designing is about defining and planning how you are going to do something before you do it.

As such, it is a very broad discipline that is not limited to the materialization of a product, for example, but increasingly focuses on intangible culture, the virtual, experiences and services.

I understand design as the tool with which to achieve greater harmony between the expected and obtained results.

I would highlight that aesthetics being an essential aspect of it, the relevance of many other factors cannot be overlooked: economic, technical, environmental, legal, cultural, psychological, emotional…

Personally, the design that interests me the most is the one that converges with the world of art.

Banco Naila

How important is the Sustainability concept for you?

Sustainability is vital for me.

I consider it a path that leads us to reconnect with nature and as such, I do not see it as an effort or a sacrifice, but as a privilege.

Furthermore, I find it very interesting and creative to look for more sustainable ways to face vital challenges that result in a reduction in energy impact, waste creation or environmental pollution, for example.

But if at any point I feel especially linked to the challenge of sustainability, it is because I consider that it involves recovering certain traditional ways of thinking that are very present in Galician culture.

If we look at our most deeply rooted rural areas, there is no waste, everything is saved and reused, and anything can be given a new use, combining it or not with other elements in an absolutely genuine way.

Where does your inspiration come from and how does Atlantic Culture influence you?

I have three main sources of inspiration that constantly impact in my work: Galician culture, focusing right now on research into the rural world, contemporary art, because it invites an open mind and a questioning of paradigms and fashion, which transports me and invites me to dream.

I live the Atlantic culture from the Galician culture and, as this is so important in my work, obviously the Atlantic culture becomes something crucial for me, meaning a desire for relationship and interconnection with other territories with which we are united through an immense and exciting ocean.

Because I lived a period of my life in Catalonia, I contrasted the green Mediterranean with the intense blue of the Atlantic, the stillness of a sea with the brave and tides of an ocean, and the certainties of a homogeneous climate with the unpredictability of a climate that promotes “Morriña” or “A Saudade” (homesick)

And all this with the vital implications that it entails.

What’s the Atlantic Style for you? And do you recommend any place of the Atlantic Coast that you love and inspire you?

The Atlantic style is a very attractive imagery in which nature and the landscapes that surround the sea take on a special role.

Consequently, as a possible lifestyle, for me it would be characterized by being closely linked to nature, even extrapolating to naturalness as an aspect of personality and the acceptance of the wisdom of the natural flow of life, with a component of strength, passion and courage.

The Galician Atlantic coast is full of magical corners and as a whole I find it very inspiring.

Linked to the Bela Furtiva project, the most important reference for us: The natural spaces of Razo and Baldaio.

And finally and to close, which piece created with Bela Furtiva is your favorite and what are your next steps?

Bela Furtiva emerged at a time when I designed pieces with a certain naturalness, in a very fluid and organic way.

I can’t talk about favorites, because they are all creating stories that make a lot of sense to me and that I think can make sense to the public.

In any case, the piece that I like the most in general is the Xara bench.

Experience tells us that there is something about it that immediately attracts attention, even with its apparent simplicity.

The future plan is to take Bela Furtiva abroad, internationalize it, but we are still beginning to make ourselves known and each step has its moment.

In the shortest term we want to stand out as a reference for designer furniture and ambassadors of Galician culture in the Iberian Peninsula.

INTSIGHT

INTSIGHT

Why We Love It | Montse Vicens from Barcelona with an Atlantic soul.

Her passion for details, her sensitivity for beauty and design is perfectly reflected in her INTSIGHT interior design brand.

Behind every project she carries out, the connection with the people behind her cannot be missing. She listens carefully and then transforms her ideas into authentic projects, created to last and remember.

Her connection with the Atlantic goes back a long way, when she was a child and she traveled with her family to Galicia. Today this connection still exists and she knew how to take it further by creating authentically Atlantic projects, paying attention to every detail and of course taking into account the people who were behind it.

What’s the favorite thing of your job?

When a client calls us to ask for something, during the first session we ask them a lot of questions and we discover that what they need goes beyond what they initially thought, or what they need is something different.

That INSIGHT (without T) shared with him is the most comforting thing and what generates confidence in us.

What are your references when looking for ideas?

Talk to and listen to anyone who is directly or indirectly involved with the project.

I am inspired by observing personal projects carried out by ordinary people as I find authenticity in what they do.

I also learn from other professional studios that I admire.

But for me, what inspires me the most are people, everyday life and travel.

You are in Barcelona but you have an Atlantic soul. Where does that connection you have with the Atlantic come from?

I have traveled to Galicia since I was child and 20 years ago I discovered A Casa de Aldán, Alfonso Penela and many other Galician architects and above all I discovered the Rías Baixas with the help of a great designer and person.

Neboa is a design and hospitality concept inspired by the Atlantic regions and culture.

Born in Galicia but with a broad view towards Ireland, Brittany, New England…

It was a refreshing approach that opened up many possibilities and made us connect with your vision very quickly.

Your outlook changed during that initial session together, where a world of possibilities opened up to you beyond the renovation of your small hostel in Vigo, which was initially what you were looking for.

This is the part of the work process that makes us happiest. Make you think big!

After connecting with your most Atlantic side, we are going to talk about how Néboa was born, your contribution to the creation of this brand and, above all, to understand what the Atlantic style is.

You helped me organize all the ideas around this concept and gave shape to the first style guide that we applied at Lar Atlántica. How was your experience on this project?

It was quite an experience and great teamwork.

We developed a style guide that you applied authentically.

At that moment you already began to feel it, great results soon arrived.

How is a Style born?

A style is born from observation and attention to details. It is a sum of elements that are repeated and that generate a connection with people. It is not about following trends, but about starting from the most authentic and essential.

What is Atlantic Style for you?

Néboa represents it perfectly.

If a person wanted to bring the Atlantic Style to their home, what could they not be missing?

Something from Sargadelos, some Camariñas lace, some chestnut soap.

Any piece of local crafts or design pieces that reflect the identity and culture of the Atlantic region. And of course the gastronomy.

You have worked for several hotels and accommodations, what has been your experience and what learnings have you learned? What do you think of applying the Atlantic Style in this sector?

A lot of work is being done specifically in Galicia.
There are true gems yet to be rehabilitated.

We have native architects such as Alfonso Penela, Carlos Quintans, Elsa Urquijo, Cesar Portela who are very representative of this culture, and other international architects such as David Chipperfield who give voice to everything that is being done.

And of course private investments that do a great job as well.

Neboa has the mission of educating, creating valuable connections and sharing the Atlantic culture to create a great community from Galicia.

Néboa encompasses many disciplines and we really like being able to collaborate with you 10 years after its creation in this new stage that you are launching.

Frouma Atlantic Wood

Frouma Atlantic wood

Why We Love It | From Ribeira (A Coruña), Fran designs and builds pieces of furniture with a very Atlantic raw material.

A material as simple as the wood of the Bateas (Galician mussel farms) turns it into totally personalized furniture and with an authentic Atlantic spirit.

The process is completely handmade and sustainable, Frouma only uses natural products.

Designs that come directly from the Atlantic.

Where to find | https://frouma.com/

All pictures are from Frouma Atlantic Wood

How was Frouma born?

Since my childhood I have been surrounded by wood in my father’s carpentry.

Summers as a student helping him, making my first pieces and… almost without realizing it, I reopened the carpentry shop in 2008 until 2014.

Later, for years, I traveled to multiple countries and cities around the world working for the most important cabinetmaking and furniture companies from contract industry.

It helped me to know the techniques, designs and trends at the vanguard of the world.

But the most important thing is that in this period, Frouma began to be born in my head.

I wanted put together design, sustainability and the integration of the latest technological developments in a single brand.

Transmit the value of what is authentic, of a job well done, conscientiously.

Revalue artisan work, show the importance of time in the face of the immediacy of current consumption.

And what the best way to demonstrate the importance of time was recovering the Batea wood after some 25 years immersed in the Atlantic Ocean.

We have a responsibility to change towards a fair, ethical and sustainable business model.

Who are you?

My first memories are already linked to wood, playing among shavings and sawdust in my father’s carpentry shop.

The deep knowledge of this profession and the knowledge acquired over years working all over the world, has brought us back to our land, Galicia and the sea.

Shapes, textures, memories.

Each piece is impregnated with the Atlantic essence and full of Galician history.

Each piece is impregnated with the Atlantic essence and full of Galician history.

FRAN

What makes you unique?

We design and manufacture furniture with a unique design and full of Atlantic history from raft wood.

We believe in a sustainable, ethical and fair model.

We innovate by integrating technology, connectivity and functionality in each piece.

Frouma generates a positive impact on the environment, since to produce our furniture we do not need to cut down any trees, at the same time we plant an indigenous tree for each sale of our pieces, in this way we give back to the earth what is its own.

How do you define Frouma in a few words?

Froma is honest, authentic and committed.

Each piece is unique, unrepeatable and full of history.

How is the Atlantic culture reflected in your work?

The essence of Frouma is Galicia, its history and character.

Each grain of the Frouma pieces are impregnated with saltpeter and an Atlantic character.
